For as long as homework has been a part of school life in the United States, so too has the debate over its value.

— Today, the Center for American Progress released a new report that takes a first-of-its-kind look at homework assignment quality.

In reviewing a snapshot of homework samples collected using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk), the authors of the report find: The report also includes policy recommendations to help states, districts, and schools improve homework quality and opportunities for students to practice high-quality, rigorous coursework at home.

On our own Student Life in America survey, over 50% of students reported feeling stressed, 25% reported that homework was their biggest source of stress, and on average teens are spending one-third of their study time feeling stressed, anxious, or stuck.
