Fiction Writing (CRW801M) 3 units Actual writing of fiction with focus on a work of substantial length, such as a short novel or novella, or a collection of short stories; the completed work will be discussed and evaluated in a workshop.Poetry Writing Techniques (CRW692M) 3 units An intensive study of the techniques in writing poetry, including discussion and critical evaluation of the works of contemporary poets in conjunction with a workshop concentrating on the students’ own output.

These workshops will give the students the opportunity to discuss and produce original writing in the company of experienced professionals.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships The MFA Program at New England College is the only low-residency program to offer Graduate Teaching Assistantships.

Partially and fully funded assistantships provide students with a unique opportunity to gain pertinent teaching experience with a variety of courses and learning environments.

Playwriting (CRW803M) 3 units Actual writing of plays with emphasis on characterization, motivation, plot, etc., the student must present a completed script for stage, radio, or screen for discussion in a workshop.

The Art of Literary Journalism (CRW671M) 3 units A workshop on the art of writing reviews of books, plays, movies, TV programs, art, and music, in which the students’ writings are discussed and evaluated.The MFA’s academic model is studio/research: integrating substantial work in the academic study and creative production of literary art.Students are individually mentored by accomplished, award‐winning faculty members who are among the most compelling writers in their genres, and who also are known for their excellence in teaching.New England College’s Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program is a truly transformative learning experience for writers.The Master of Fine Arts delivers a rigorous, individualized program, with four dynamic degree tracks: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Dual‐Genre.Every student chooses a special committee of two faculty members who work closely alongside the student to design a course of study within the broad framework established by the department.Students participate in a graduate writing workshop each semester and take six additional one-semester courses for credit, at least four of them in English or American literature, comparative literature, literature in the modern or Classical languages or cultural studies (two per semester during the first year and one per semester during the second year).Four semester, 64 credit MFA program Low-residency model Every semester begins with an MFA Residency at New England College’s Henniker, NH, campus Additionally, New England College’s MFA program is the first and only low‐residency program to offer Graduate Teaching Assistantships, providing students opportunities to gain relevant teaching experience for future academic careers.Students also have opportunities for specialized study in areas such as translation, cross‐genre writing/hybrid forms, editing and publishing, new media, and performance.MFA students pursue intensive study with distinguished faculty committed to creative and intellectual achievement.Each year the department enrolls only eight MFA students, four in each concentration.
