Before you start your essay or research paper, you should familiarize yourself with some general APA rules.First, your paper must be typed on standard-sized paper (8.5” x 11”), using one-inch margins on each side.Understandably, it can be overwhelming to compile a paper that conforms to all these rules!
The APA writing style has evolved through time and several changes have been adapted in response to the electronic information age.
What follows are some useful pointers for those of you who have been asked to write a paper using the APA format.
APA also requires double-spacing and the use of a font that is legible. Times New Roman font is preferred, although you should always consult your teacher or professor if in doubt about the font.
The top of every page should include a running head/page header. Next, type your “PAPER TITLE” in all caps the header flush left.
The page header should be inserted flush left while the page numbering should be flush right and at the top of the page.
This is how the running head should appear on the title page: Running head: TITLE OF PAPEROn every subsequent page, the running head should look as follows: TITLE OF PAPERYour title should be centered, typed in upper and lowercase letters, and located in the upper half of the page.
The importance of using proper citations cannot be understated.
It gives credit to the authors for ideas and research that you have incorporated into your own paper.
Footnotes are occasionally used to back up substantial information in your text.
They can be found centered on the first line below the Running Head, numbered as they are identified in the text. Tables are used to present quantitative data or statistical results of analyses.
